The importance of open space on a canvas is illustrated here by Gill Miller. "Learning how to create a cohesive, balanced and engaging composition with so much open space has taken me 5 years to learn," says Gill. "For me, anyway, it's always been a natural inclination to cover the whole canvas with shapes and objects, and relying on those to construct the composition. This just takes a lot more forethought".
